FSET Completes Taiwan’s Largest Battery Cell Plant In Changhua Coastal Industrial Park Direct Supply to Energy Storage and EV Markets, Strengthening the New Energy Landscape

2025 / 03 / 13

Formosa Smart Energy Tech Corporation (FSET) has officially announced the completion and mass production of its 2.1GWh battery cell and module plant in Changhua Coastal Industrial Park, built with an investment exceeding tens of billions of NTD. This facility stands as the largest lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cell production base in Taiwan.

With highly automated production lines, FSET has already secured large-scale orders for energy storage systems and is set to begin shipments of EV battery cells later this year. To meet growing market demand, FSET has also initiated Phase 2 expansion, focusing on the development of diverse battery capacities and key products, further strengthening its position in the new energy sector.

Sandy Wang, FSET’s Chairperson, emphasized that with the continuous growth of the global energy storage and electric vehicle (EV) industries, FSET has proactively engaged with industry partners during the 2023-2024 plant construction phase to stay ahead of market trends and secure orders in advance. This approach has ensured a seamless transition from construction to mass production and delivery.

Currently, confirmed shipments include 100MW/350MWh large-scale energy storage projects, mass production of battery packs for electric buses, and test battery packs for electric logistics ve-hicles. Additionally, leveraging Taiwan’s domestic manufacturing advantages, FSET has successfully developed a UPS battery system tailored for U.S. data centers, strategically positioning itself in the booming global AI market.

The Battery Cell and Module Plant in Changhua Coastal Industrial Park integrates Formosa Plastics Group’s core technologies and resources, achieving highly automated production across the entire eight-step battery cell manufacturing process—slurry mixing, coating, rolling, slitting, assembly, baking, electrolyte injection, and formation—all the way to final module packaging and shipment. Sandy Wang emphasized that one successful factory paves the way for the next. Over the next five to nine years, FSET plans to invest more than NTD 40 billion in a phased expansion, constructing additional battery cell plants, casing plants, metal processing facilities, module plants, and cathode material plants. This will further scale up domestic battery production, establishing a more com-prehensive, robust, and resilient new energy supply chain, reinforcing Formosa Plastics Group’s long-standing competitive edge in the petrochemical industry.

Stephen Liu, FSET’s president, emphasized that safety and quality are the top priorities at the Bat-tery Cell and Module Plant. The facility is built on 1,703 deep foundation piles, each reaching 27 meters, ensuring it can withstand a magnitude 6 earthquake. The battery cell production lines maintain strict control over three critical factors—dust, burrs, and moisture—and implement a comprehensive five-layer management system covering cleanliness, temperature, humidity, safety, and efficiency. The core production areas meet semiconductor-grade cleanroom standards, with round-the-clock temperature regulation and humidity control maintained between 0.5% and 2%. Additionally, the plant is equipped with explosion-proof water tanks and a 51-layer charge-discharge current protection system to ensure operational safety. To further enhance production and operational efficiency, the facility also incorporates automated logistics systems, including AGV (Automated Guided Vehicles) and robotic arms.

The Battery Cell and Module Plant is built upon five core control mechanisms, ensuring unwaver-ing product quality. Stephen Liu stated that FSET’s product portfolio includes battery systems for energy storage, electric vehicles (EVs), and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS). All battery cells used in these systems are designed with high energy density and long cycle life, contributing to the development of an advanced, safe, and stable battery cell supply chain in Taiwan. As the world embraces carbon reduction goals and the transition to new energy, the Battery Cell and Module Plant will serve as a key cornerstone in Taiwan’s new energy industry development.

The Battery Cell and Module Plant leverages Formosa Plastics Group’s technological expertise, incorporating state-of-the-art innovations such as:

  • A newly developed computerized lithium battery production system by Formosa Technolo-gies Corporation
  • A smart lighting system by Nan Ya Photonics Incorporation
  • An advanced wastewater treatment system by Formosa Waters Technology Co., Ltd.
  • A fully automated finished goods warehouse by Formosa Heavy Industries Corporation

These integrations ensure maximum production efficiency and top-tier quality management, es-tablishing a new industry benchmark and elevating the new energy supply chain. Through technological innovation and industrial upgrades, FSET’s Battery Cell and Module Plant is poised to drive future transformation and lead the new energy revolution.
