Carbon Capture and Utilization

Microalgae-Based Carbon Fixation – Among the World’s Most Efficient Solutions

Driving Sustainability Through Decarbonization

As part of our commitment to expanding the clean energy landscape and upholding Formosa Plastics Group’s core values of energy conservation and carbon reduction, Formosa Smart Energy Tech invested in a pioneering carbon capture start-up spun off from National Cheng Kung University in 2023. By supporting academic innovation in microalgae-based carbon capture technology, we are actively contributing to sustainable environmental development and helping to accelerate Taiwan’s journey toward carbon neutrality.

Microalgae are among the most efficient carbon-fixing organisms on the planet—cultivating one metric ton of microalgae can absorb up to two metric tons of CO₂. This natural, eco-friendly solution aligns perfectly with our core values of energy-saving, energy storage, new energy, and recycling.

Water Purification: Advancing the Circular Economy

In addition to its leading role in carbon capture, microalgae technology offers exceptional potential in industrial wastewater treatment. It effectively removes heavy metals, ammonia nitrogen, and other pollutants commonly found in petrochemical, semiconductor, and electroplating industries. The treated effluent meets regulatory standards—paving the way for a new model of circular economy driven by green biotechnology.

Agricultural Applications: Enriching Taiwan’s Farmland

Rich in nutrients, microalgae can be developed into feed additives for aquaculture and livestock. In field applications, shrimp survival rates increased dramatically from 10% to over 50%. Microalgae can also be formulated into bio-liquid fertilizers, enhancing the growth of leafy vegetables, fruits, and gourds—thereby strengthening Taiwan’s agricultural competitiveness through sustainable innovation.

Innovation Without Limits

In partnership with National Cheng Kung University’s Microalgae Laboratory, Formosa Smart Energy Tech is building Taiwan’s most comprehensive microalgae genomic library. By analyzing carbohydrate content, protein composition, and antioxidant capacity, we classify strains by function to enable targeted applications. This breakthrough research expands microalgae’s potential beyond carbon reduction—driving forward a new wave of green innovation.
