Formosa Smart Energy (FSE) is participating in this year’s Energy Taiwan under the theme “Integrated Energy for the AI Era.” With a focus on AI data center (AIDC) applications, the company is entering the market through high C-rate backup battery solutions while expanding into data center system integration, Cloud Service Provider (CSP) services, and operations management – capabilities that together span energy equipment provisioning, construction engineering, and ongoing operational service. FSE is also extending its domestically produced batteries into a broader range of smart-use scenarios, including automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and quadruped robots, opening new growth opportunities for the AI era.

Sandy Wang, Chairwoman of Formosa Smart Energy, noted that the rapid growth of AI computing power is driving global demand for data center infrastructure, positioning it as the next major market for the energy industry. With its in-house cell technology, system development capabilities, and engineering integration experience – combined with the industrial resources accumulated across the broader Formosa Plastics Group (FPG) – FSE holds a differentiated advantage in entering the AIDC market.

Domestically, FSE has already deployed battery modules to a data center belonging to a semiconductor company and completed construction of a data center for Nanya Technology. On the services side, FSE is planning a joint-venture approach to CSP operations, building capabilities in data management, operational analytics, and system integration. Looking ahead, the company will build on this track record at home and abroad to expand its AIDC service footprint further – evolving from an energy equipment supplier into a long-term partner across the AIDC space.

Stephen Liu, President of Formosa Smart Energy, stated that the 90V50Ah high C-rate battery on display at this year’s show has been developed specifically for AIDC backup requirements, with an emphasis on short-duration, high-power output supporting continuous discharge of up to 8C, and charge of up to 3C. The system can be flexibly configured to match UPS power and backup requirements, and is paired with multi-tier BMS monitoring and protection – demonstrating FSE’s in-house development capabilities from the cell level through to the complete battery system.

Liu also pointed to smart-use environments as another key area for expanding battery applications, noting that different equipment types carry distinct requirements for power, space, and operating conditions. FSE’s AGV batteries have already entered the mass production rollout phase, with cumulative orders of 400 units delivered to date, with validation partnerships underway with multiple

Automation and manufacturing companies. Building on this foundation, FSE is now extending its battery systems into a broader range of platforms – from AMRs to quadruped robots – reflecting its ability to tailor solutions to the specific needs of each equipment.

In quadruped robotics, FSE has partnered with GreenTrans Corporation, an affiliate of China Motor Corporation (CMC), to jointly develop battery systems. By combining FSE’s battery expertise with GreenTrans’s capabilities in full-system development and intelligent mobility, the two companies aim to promote the localization of key components. Chen Wei-Ming, President of GreenTrans, stated that FSE’s strong battery system development and integration capabilities provide critical support for domestically made quadruped robots, and expressed hope that the two companies will continue deepening their collaboration to accelerate adoption across a broader range of smart-use scenarios.

Formosa Smart Energy is also deepening its presence in large-scale energy storage and next-generation battery technology. Its liquid-cooled energy storage system offers a capacity 4.61MWh per container, with cell temperature variance controlled within 3°C to enhance operational stability. In solid-state batteries, the company is advancing key technologies including high-areal-density electrodes and dry-process manufacturing. With its battery recycling capability, battery-grade lithium carbonate can be refined to 99.5% purity, and its microalgae-derived oil has obtained ISCC EU certification and is advancing toward scaled production as a feedstock for sustainable aviation fuel.

From AIDC and smart-use environments to large-scale storage, next-generation batteries, and resource circularity, Formosa Smart Energy continues to turn its R&D breakthroughs into real-world industry results – expanding the boundaries of new-energy applications across the AI era.
